Travel Arrangements

[Travel to and from Berg-en-Dal] [Private travel to Berg-en-Dal]

Delegates should make their own travel arrangements to and from South Africa. Should you require any assistance or advice, please, contact the Secretariat. The Secretariat will also gladly assist you in making hotel reservations for you should you arrive before the Workshop. Please contact us and give us the details.

Travel to and from Berg-en-Dal

Most delegates will arrive via O R Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) (JHB). Bus transport from O R Tambo Airport to Berg-en-Dal (and return) will be provided for delegates at an additional cost. The journey time is some five to six hours.

Please note: In order to have sufficient time to comfortably reach the Kruger Park before the gates close, the busses must leave Johannesburg Airport no later than 11:00 on Sunday 30 August 2009. If you are going to use the bus transport, please ensure that your flight arrives in Johannesburg sufficiently early (allowing time for immigration formalities, baggage retrieval, etc and flight delays) to meet that deadline. Also, the return busses will leave Berg-en-Dal at 10:00 on Friday 4 September and should reach O R Tambo International Airport between 15:00 and 16:00. Your return flights should be booked to allow sufficient time for security and check-in procedures and for unforeseen delays. (NB: most international flights depart during the evening.)

Please indicate on the online registration form if you wish to use the bus transport option.

Delegates also have the option to fly from Johannesburg to the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (Nelspruit) (MQP) which is reasonably close to Berg-en-Dal (about one and a half hours drive). Local carriers SA Airlink / SA Express offer a number of flights to there from Johannesburg. The flight time is approximately 50 - 70 minutes. There are also a small number of flights to MQP from Cape Town (CPT) and Durban (DUR). Transport from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport to Berg-en-Dal (and return) will be provided for delegates at an additional cost.

Private travel to Berg-en-Dal

Delegates who wish to make their own way to Berg-en-Dal by private vehicle can consult the Kruger Park website for routes from the Johannesburg area to the various gates of the Park.

Please note: in August and September, the Park and camp gates all close at 18:00 (6 pm). Please ensure you arrive at the Park with sufficient time to pass through the formalities at the Park gate and then to get to Berg-en-Dal before 18:00. The Kruger Park website also has a table of minimum travel times between the various gates and camps in the Park. For Berg-en-Dal, the recommended Park entrance gates (with the minimum travel times to Berg-en-Dal) are: Malelane (20 mins), Numbi (2 hrs 15 mins), Crocodile Bridge (2 hrs 15mins).

Notes:

  1. The minimum travel times do not allow for any stops for game viewing, etc.
  2. No motorcycles or open vehicles are allowed in the Park.
  3. Outside of the camps, visitors are not allowed to get out of their vehicle in the Park, except at certain specifically designated picnic and view sites.
  4. Travel within the Park is slower than outside with speed limits in the Park of 50 km/h on tarred roads and 40 km/h on gravel roads and a recommended average speed of 30 km/h. Therefore, if you are pressed for time, rather enter the Park by the Malelane Gate as this is the closest to Berg-en-Dal.
